But since there are a lot of schools to pick from, how do you determine which ones to consider? And more notably, once you have fine tuned your options, how do you select the right one? Many prospective students start by reviewing the schools that are closest to their homes. When they have identified those that are within commuting distance, they gravitate toward the cheapest one. Yes, location and tuition cost are necessary considerations when reviewing welder vocational schools, but they are not the only ones. Other concerns include such things as accreditation, reputation and job placement rates. So before starting your search for a vocational school to become a welder, it’s prudent to establish a list of qualifications that your chosen welding school must have. But before we explore our due diligence checklist, let’s cover a little bit about how to become a welder.

Welder Certificate and Degree Training

There are several options available to get training as a welder in a trade or vocational school. You can obtain a diploma, a certificate or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are offered in Welding Engineering or Welding Technology, but are more advanced programs than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also made available combined with an apprenticeship program. Below are brief descriptions of the most prevalent welding programs offered in Buttonwillow CA.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are normally offered by California trade and technical schools and require about one year to finish. They are more hands-on training in scope, designed primarily to develop welding skills. They can provide a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or supplemental skills for working welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take two years to complete and are most often offered by California community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology furnishes a more extensive education than the certificate or diploma while still supplying the foundation that readies students to enter the workforce.

A number of states and municipalities do have licensing requirements for welders, so be sure to check for your location of future employment. If needed, the welding school you choose should prepare you for any licensing examinations that you will need to take in addition to providing the appropriate training to become a qualified welder in Buttonwillow CA.

Welding Certification Options

A large number of Buttonwillow CA employers not only demand a certificate or degree from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a renowned organization such as the American Welding Society (AWS). Different certifications are offered based on the type of work that the welder performs. Some of the things that certification can attest to are the welder’s ability to

  • Operate in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specific metal thicknesses
  • Work with certain types of welds
  • Perform in compliance with contract specifications

As earlier stated, many cities, states or local municipalities have licensing mandates for welders. Of those requiring licensing, some also require certification for different kinds of work. Certification is also a means to demonstrate to Buttonwillow CA employers that you are an exceptionally skilled and qualified welder. So just as with licensing, check the requirements for your local area and verify that the welder trade school you choose preps you for certification as needed.

Online Welder Training

Welding is very much a manual kind of trade, and consequently not very suitable for training online. Even so, there are a few online welding classes offered by various Buttonwillow CA area community colleges and trade schools that may count toward a certificate or degree program. These classes primarily deal with such subjects as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help provide a beginner a foundation to initiate their training and education. Nevertheless, the most critical point is that you can’t learn how to weld or use welding materials until you actually do it. Clearly that can’t be accomplished online. These skills have to be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for seasoned welders that would like to advance their knowledge or possibly attain a more advanced degree. So if you should come across an online welding degree or certificate program, be very careful and make sure that the bulk of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.

How to Decide on a Welding Vocational Program

As you probably know, there are numerous welding vocational and trade schools in the Buttonwillow CA area. That’s why it’s necessary to determine up front what qualifications your school of choice must have. We have already covered 2 important ones that most people consider first, which are location and tuition cost. As mentioned, although they are essential qualifications, they are not the only ones that must be considered. After all, the program you choose is going to provide the training that will be the foundation of your new vocation as a welder. So below are more factors you might need to evaluate before choosing a welding technical school.

Accreditation. It’s extremely important that the welding tech school you select is accredited by either a national or a regional organization. There are two basic types of accreditation. The school may attain Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a single program the school has, for instance Welding Technology. So verify that the program you select is accredited, not just the school itself. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping make sure that you get a superior education, the accreditation can also help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for Buttonwillow CA schools that are not accredited. Finally, for those states or municipalities that mandate licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited as well.

Job Placement and Apprenticeship Programs. Many welder degree or diploma programs are provided combined with an apprenticeship program. Various other schools will help place you in a job or an apprenticeship after graduation. Find out if the schools you are reviewing assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. These schools must have partnerships with local unions and various Buttonwillow CA metal working businesses to which they can place their students. More established schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can rely upon for referrals. These programs can assist students in finding employment and develop relationships within the regional welding community.

Completion and Job Placement Rates. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students that start an educational program and complete it. It’s important that the welding school you choose has a high completion rate. A low rate could indicate that the students who were in the program were unhappy with the training, the instructors, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the caliber of training. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the program has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of  Buttonwillow CA contacts to help students secure employment or apprenticeships upon graduation.

Up-to-date Equipment and Facilities. After you have narrowed down your selection of welder programs to two or three possibilities, you should think out going to the campuses to inspect their facilities. Confirm that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are modern. In particular, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be using on the job. If you are uncertain what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local Buttonwillow CA welding professional if they can give you some suggestions.

School Location. Although we already briefly discussed the relevance of location, there are a couple of additional points that we need to cover. You should bear in mind that unless you can move, the welding school you choose must be within commuting distance of your Buttonwillow CA home. If you do decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides relocation expenses there might be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially the case for welding diploma programs offered by community colleges. Additionally, if the school provides a job placement or apprenticeship program, most likely their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school needs to be in a region or state where you ultimately will desire to work.

Smaller Classes. Personalized training is essential for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s possible to be overlooked in larger classes and not obtain much individualized training. Ask what the average class size is for the  Buttonwillow CA area welder programs you are considering. Inquire if you can attend a couple of classes so that you can observe how much personal attention the students are getting. While there, talk with several of the students and get their feedback. Also, chat with a couple of the teachers and find out what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they hold.

Flexible Class Scheduling. Lots of folks learn a new trade while still employed at their current job. Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are considering are convenient enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Buttonwillow CA, make certain that the schools you are considering provide those options. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you pick offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.

Picking the ideal welding school will undoubtedly be the most critical decision you will make to start your new profession. As we have addressed in this article, there are a number of factors that you will need to assess and compare among the schools you are reviewing. It’s a necessity that any welding training program that you are examining includes a considerable amount of hands-on training. Classes should be small in size and each student should have their own welding machine to train with. Programs vary in duration and the kind of credential provided, so you will have to decide what length of program and certificate or degree will best satisfy your needs. Each program provides unique possibilities for certification also. Buttonwillow, California

Buttonwillow[3] is a census-designated place (CDP) in the San Joaquin Valley, in Kern County, California, United States. Buttonwillow is located 26 miles (42 km) west of Bakersfield,[3] at an elevation of 269 feet (82 m)).[2] The population was 1,508 at the 2010 census, up from 1,266 at the 2000 census. The center of population of California is located in Buttonwillow.[citation needed]

The town was originally called Buena Vista when it was founded in 1895, but the name quickly became Buttonwillow.[3]

Buttonwillow was named for the buttonbush, (Cephalanthus occidentalis). A lone buttonbush served as a landmark on an old trans-valley trail, and was used by ancient Yokut Indian as a meeting place, later becoming the site of settlers' stock rodeos. The Miller-Lux holdings company eventually established a headquarters and store near the tree.[4] This tree is listed as California Historical Landmark No. 492. This landmark is now known as the Buttonwillow Tree.

The first United States Post Office was established at Buttonwillow in 1895.[3]
