Teec Nos Pos AZ welder working on pipeSelecting the right welder trade school near Teec Nos Pos AZ is an essential first step to launching your new occupation as a professional welder. But since there are a lot of schools to choose from, how do you determine which ones to consider? And more notably, once you have narrowed down your alternatives, how do you select the right one? Most prospective students start by reviewing the schools that are closest to their residences. Once they have found those that are within driving distance, they are drawn toward the cheapest one. Yes, location and the cost of tuition are crucial considerations when examining welder trade schools, but they are not the only ones. Other considerations include such things as accreditation, reputation and job placement rates. So before initiating your search for a vocational school to become a welder, it’s prudent to create a list of qualifications that your chosen welding school must have. But before we delve into our due diligence checklist, let’s talk a little bit about how to become a welder.

Welder Certificate and Degree Programs

There are a number of options to get training as a welder in a trade or technical school. You can obtain a diploma, a certificate or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are available in Welding Engineering or Welding Technology, but are more advanced degrees than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also made available combined with an apprenticeship program. Following are short explanations of the most prevalent welding programs offered in Teec Nos Pos AZ.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are normally offered by Arizona trade and technical schools and require about one year to complete. They are more hands-on training in scope, designed mainly to develop welding skills. They can furnish a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or supplemental skills for working welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take two years to complete and are most often offered by Arizona community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology provides a more extensive education than the certificate or diploma while still supplying the foundation that readies students to enter the workforce.

A number of states and municipalities do have licensing requirements for welders, therefore make sure to find out for your location of future employment. If required, the welder school you select should ready you for any licensing exams that you will need to take in addition to furnishing the appropriate training to become a professional welder in Teec Nos Pos AZ.

Welder Certification Alternatives

A large number of Teec Nos Pos AZ employers not only expect a certificate or degree from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a highly regarded agency like the American Welding Society (AWS). A variety of certifications are offered dependent on the type of work that the welder performs. A few of the things that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with certain metal thicknesses
  • Work with certain kinds of welds
  • Operate based on contract specifications

As earlier stated, many states, cities or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those mandating licensing, some also require certification for different kinds of work. Certification is also a way to prove to Teec Nos Pos AZ employers that you are an exceptionally skilled and experienced welder. So just as with licensing, check the requirements for your local area and make certain that the welding tech school you choose readies you for certification as needed.

Online Welder Degree and Certificate Programs

Welding is very much a hands-on type of trade, and therefore not extremely suitable for online training. Having said that, there are a small number of online welding classes offered by various Teec Nos Pos AZ area community colleges and vocational schools that can count toward a certificate or degree program. These courses primarily deal with such subjects as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help provide a novice a foundation to start their education and training. However, the most important point is that you can’t learn how to weld or work with welding materials unless you actually do it. Obviously that can’t be accomplished online. These skills have to be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for seasoned welders that want to advance their expertise or possibly earn a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding degree or certificate program, be extremely cautious and confirm that the larger part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.

How to Choose a Welding Vocational Program

Teec Nos Pos AZ construction worker weldingAfter you have decided on the credential you want to obtain, a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to assess schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many welding trade and technical schools in the Teec Nos Pos AZ area. That’s why it’s essential to determine up front what qualifications your selected school must have. We have previously discussed a couple of significant ones that many people consider first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As mentioned, although they are essential qualifications, they are not the only ones that must be looked at. After all, the school you decide on is going to provide the instruction that will be the foundation of your new career as a welder. So following are some additional factors you may need to evaluate before choosing a welding tech school.

Accreditation. It’s essential that the welding vocational school you select is accredited by either a regional or a national agency. There are 2 basic types of accreditation. The school may receive Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a single program the school has, for example Welding Technology. So confirm that the program you select is accredited, not just the school itself. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping ensure that you get a quality education, the accreditation might also assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for Teec Nos Pos AZ non-accredited schools. Also, for those states or municipalities that require licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited as well.

Job Assistance and Apprenticeship Programs. A large number of welder certificate or degree programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program. Various other schools will assist in placing you in a job or an apprenticeship upon graduation. Find out if the schools you are considering help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. The schools should have associations with local unions and various Teec Nos Pos AZ metal working businesses to which they can place their students. More established schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can rely upon for placements. These programs can assist students in finding employment and establish associations within the local welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that begin an academic program and finish it. It’s essential that the welding program you select has a high completion rate. A reduced rate might indicate that the students who enrolled in the program were unhappy with the instruction, the teachers, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the quality of training. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the program has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of  Teec Nos Pos AZ contacts to assist students secure apprenticeships or employment upon graduation.

Modern Facilities and Equipment. After you have narrowed down your selection of welding schools to two or three possibilities, you should think out visiting the campuses to evaluate their facilities. Confirm that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be taught on are up-to-date. Specifically, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be working with on the job. If you are uncertain what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Teec Nos Pos AZ welding contractor if they can give you some pointers.

School Location. Although we previously briefly talked about the significance of location, there are a couple of additional issues that we need to cover. You should keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the welder school you choose must be within driving distance of your Teec Nos Pos AZ home. If you do choose to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides relocation expenses there could be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially the case for welder diploma programs offered by community colleges. Also, if the school provides an apprenticeship or job placement program, most likely their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school should be in an area or state where you ultimately will want to work.

Smaller Classes. One-on-one instruction is important for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s possible to get overlooked in bigger classes and not obtain much personalized instruction. Ask what the typical class size is for the  Teec Nos Pos AZ area welder programs you are reviewing. Ask if you can sit in on a few classes so that you can experience how much personal attention the students are getting. While there, speak with several of the students and get their feedback. Similarly, talk to a few of the teachers and find out what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they have earned.

Convenient Class Schedules. Many people learn a new trade while still employed at their current job. Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evenings or on weekends near Teec Nos Pos AZ, make certain that the schools you are assessing offer those alternatives. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, verify that the school you pick offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family circumstances.

Why Did You Want to Become a Welding Professional?

When getting ready to interview for a Welding job, it's important to reflect on questions you may be asked. Among the questions that hiring managers typically ask Welder candidates is "What compelled you to decide on Welding as a career?". What the interviewer is trying to learn is not only the personal reasons you may have for becoming a Welding Tech, but also what characteristics and abilities you possess that make you good at your profession. You will probably be asked questions pertaining exclusively to Welding, in addition to a certain number of general interview questions, so you should prepare several approaches about how you want to address them. Considering there are numerous factors that go into choosing a career, you can address this primary question in a variety of ways. When readying an answer, attempt to include the reasons the work interests you along with the strengths you possess that make you an outstanding Welder and the leading choice for the position. Don't make an effort to memorize a response, but jot down several concepts and anecdotes that pertain to your own experiences and strengths. Reading through sample answers can help you to develop your own concepts, and provide ideas of what to discuss to enthuse the recruiter.

Choose the Ideal Welding Trade Program near Teec Nos Pos AZ

Selecting the best welding school will probably be the most important decision you will make to launch your new career. As we have addressed in this article, there are several things that you will need to assess and compare between the programs you are considering. It’s a prerequisite that any welder training program that you are reviewing includes a considerable amount of hands-on instruction. Classes need to be small in size and every student should have their own welding machine to train with. Classroom teaching should provide a real-world perspective, and the training program should be current and conform with industry standards. Courses differ in length and the type of credential provided, so you will have to determine what length of program and credential will best serve your needs. Each program provides different options for certification as well. Probably the best way to research your final list of schools is to visit each campus and talk with the teachers and students. Invest some time to monitor a few classes. Inspect the campus and facilities. Make sure that you are confident that the school you choose is the best one for you. With the proper training, effort and commitment, the final result will be a new career as a professional welder in Teec Nos Pos AZ.
